Why use New Zealand merino wool sheepskin?
The secret of genuine sheepskin lies in the structure of the wool fibers, which absorb moisture, insulate against heat and cold, resist flame and maintain their resilience.
While the surface of a wool fiber repels liquids, its interior is highly absorbent, having the ability to absorb as much as 30% of its weight in moisture.
Synthetics by contrast, hold as little as 2%! By drawing perspiration away from the body, woolen products prevent the skin from feeling clammy during the summer and help to hold in heat during the winter.
Air trapped between the fibers gives the wool its insulating properties. Merino Wool provides great warmth for little weight. Merino Wool feels warm since fewer fibers touch the skin compared with other fabrics, so less heat is conducted away from the skin. The trapped air also keeps things cool when the surrounding temperature is warmer.
As wool absorbs moisture from the air, the fibers liberate heat. A single gram of wool gives off 27 calories of heat when it goes from a dry to a wet state.
