ew Zealand artist Cynthia Swaney began her career in art late in life. Although she studied art education at the State University of New York, she did not actively pursue either art or education following graduation. Instead, she married, raised a daughter, and then had successful careers in travel (booking tours for rock groups like Pink Floyd and the Doobie Brothers) and certified financial planning.
She began taking her colored pencils and drawing tablet along on family camping trips in the late 1990s, and drew whatever caught her eye„o wildflowers, pine cones, trees. Evenings and weekends she began to turn prints of her drawings into greeting cards and framed pieces. Soon her work was in demand in nearby shops and galleries.
In New Zealand she has been inspired by the charm and the delightful light here that has captivated so many artists. Her artist's eye was taken by the simple, everyday scenes that many Kiwis take for granted . . . until they see it in her drawings.
