Native Trees Growing From Seeds...

Pohutukawa Metrosideros excelsa . Aotearoa New Zealand's Christmas tree with spectacular crimson flowers during summer. Important food sources for bees, bell bird and tui.
Kowhai Sophora tetraptera . A small spreading tree with feathery leaves and pendulus yellow flowers. Favored by bees and by tui, bellbird and wood pigeons.
Manuka Tree Leptospermum Scoparium. The Manuka is a native flowering shrub that can grow to a height of 3-5m tall. The plant tolerates difficult conditions from dry to swampy soils. In spring through to early winter it produces delicate white flowers.
Mountain Flax Wharariki (Phormium Cookianum). Very easy from fresh seed. Most commonly grown by the division of rooted fans from established plants. Slow to establish and slow growing. Stout liliaceous herb, 0.6-1(-2) m tall. Leaves numerous, arising from fan-like bases.
Native seed in general is quite slow to germinate, so time and patience is required ( it can vary per seed type from a one or two to up to 6 weeks). As there are quite a few seeds in each packet, we would suggest they sow a few at a time to see how they go. Warmth, light, correct seed raising mix etc are all important and will affect germination.

There are special instructions on how to germinate the seeds. These are included on our information sheets within the seed packets and vary per tree type, for example Kowhai need boiling water poured over the seed as it has a thick seed coat.
