Everyone has their favourite music, I'm just lucky enough to get to play mine on radio from time to time and from listeners' response, I'm delighted to be able to release this selection of songs that you don't hear anymore but were so much a part of our lives not so ling ago - My Kind of Music.
Of the tracks I've chosen, there is only space here to mention a few, I wonder how many listening to Blaze Away, remember marching off from morning assembly to another school day. Recorded at a time when it was not acceptable to say 'Hell' in public, Richard Tauber's Pedro the Fisherman is still a classic of its time. The wonderful voice of Joseph Schmidt is evident in his recording of Today is the Happiest Day of My Life. Trained as a classic Hevrew singer he rose to become one of the world's favourite tenors. He sadly died of a heart attack in 1942 while digging ditches in a s Swiss Refugee Camp. He was 38.
Banned from radio in the 50s because of its irreverent style, Johnny Standley's It's in the Book nevertheless became a popular favourite with both young and old and is still remembered today.
Certainly one of the most requested songs would be Murphy and the Bricks. The origin of the words is still being debated but I doubt that anyone could improve on Ireland's Noel Murphy and his rendition of this sad tale. I'm grateful for his permission to include it in this album www.noelmurphy.org.uk.
Originally recorded by Henry Hall in 1932 Goodnight Everyone will forever be remembered as the closing song of the popular TV series Radio Times, and the inclusion of Billy T.James and the cast is bound to bring back some very happy memories.
