Karikari Olives
Karikari Olives is situated just back from Tokerau beach on Karikari Peninsula on the East Coast of Northland. This a family run business with a grove of around 2,500 trees planted in J5, Leccino, Koroneiki, Ascolano and Frantoio . These olives are harvested by hand and pneumatic rakes and the olives are pressed on-site with a state-of-the-art centrifugal press, imported from Italy.
Despite, or perhaps because of it’s youth, the industry in New Zealand is dedicated to producing and distributing the finest oils; while only 5% of the world’s olive oil is classified as extra virgin, only around 5% of New Zealand’s production is not.
Karikari Olives tests all of its oil to ensure that acid and peroxide levels are optimal. The International Olive Oil Council sets out guidelines for the use of the much misused term extra virgin and these include free fatty acid levels of less than 0.80% and peroxide levels of less than 20 mEq/kg. Karikari extra virgin olive oil has acid levels ranging from 0.10% - 0.15% and peroxide levels from 4.9 - 6.8. Of course being extra virgin is not all about chemical levels, but the rest of the judgment is in the tasting!
New Zealand has great soils and climate but to further ensure the extremely high quality of olive oil, the harvest is timed to optimize quality and the olives are treated like the delicate fruit that they are: they are harvested by hand and pneumatic rakes and any ground fruit is not pressed. The fruit is then immediately cold-pressed on-site with a state-of-the-art centrifugal press. The oil is stored in a cool dark place and bottled unfiltered and unadulterated on an as-needs basis.
