About The Book

ew Zealand is a land dominated by mountains, from the dramatic volcanoes of the North Island to the magnificent Southern Alps running most of the length of the South Island. The most prominent of these moutains are the focus of Classic Peaks of New Zealand.

Originally published in 1990 as Great Peaks of New Zealand, this book has been expanded and updated to bring it up to the present day. Each of the 17 chapters is a tribute to one mountain, whose character and features, mythology and mountaineering history is evocatively described.

The significance of these peaks ensures that the book encapsulates all of the important developments in New Zealand mountaineering. Each chapter also concludes with a route guide for one classic route on the mountain. Classic Peaks of New Zealand is a sister-volume to the best-selling Classic Walks of New Zealand and Classic Tramping in New Zealand.

Apart from this book, Hugh Logan has published extensively in mountaineering journals and other publications, and was the author of the original climbing guide to the Mount Cook Region. He is currently the Director General of Conservation.
