Many of us cherish special memories of summers past. In the deep south of New Zealand where people tend to be passionate about making the most of the abundant offerings that nature provides at that time of year, it was sacrilege if we couldn’t have fresh peas, beans and new potatoes from the garden on Christmas Day.
Back then, especially in the South Island, barbecues were not the regular event they tend to be for many people nowadays. However, one year we received a promising-looking package from my older sister in the United States. Naturally, we younger kids fell upon it but we were well and truly baffled to find it full of a whole lot of metal bits and pieces. On close examination, this metal collection revealed itself to be a kitset barbecue, which caused my father no end of consternation because he had no idea what to do with it. But that’s another story… Messing about in boats, though, now that was a family trait. Every year, without fail, Dad used to sail in the Sanders Cup and we’re be there to cheer him on.
After Christmas the family would pack up all the necessary bits and pieces and head off to the beach or the river or the lake – the location varied because it all depended on who had lent us their bach that year. The one certainty was that we’d always take with us lots of seasonal produce – much of it procured en route at roadside honesty stalls. Once established in our temporary new territory, we’d quickly search out the best places to forage for special treats – mussels, toheroa, berries – whatever could be gathered. The next few weeks were pure magic: the adults would lie back and enjoy a well-earned break and the children would utilize every moment between dawn and dusk, doing what children do.
My mother was no slouch in the kitchen, and her natural creativeness ensured food always looked sensational when it arrived at the table – whether this was at home or elsewhere. With this kind of heritage, it’s no surprise that by the age of four I was a dab hand at scrambled eggs and chives on doorstop toast, quickly graduating to gravy for the Sunday roast. Little wonder, really, that I grew up to become a food writer and food stylist."
