The Silver Fern ...
The iconic silver fern, from foetal koru to graceful frond, is a cornerstone of New Zealand culture — a symbol of national pride and as famous as the All Blacks, who wear it on their rugby shirts.
The silver fern (Cyathea dealbata) is New Zealand’s most recognised plant and the country’s forests boast 190 native fern species in total. The ferns range in size from the tiny filmy fronds of ‘Trichomanes reniform’ to the imposing black mamaku, ‘Cyathea medullaris’.
The Silver Fern has healing properties, the fronds can be peeled and the starchy inner pith used to treat ulcers, boils and foot infections. The hard, black fibres inside the stem also have traditional uses. Maori bound sharpened ponga fibre barbs to the tips of throwing spears, while the rough trunks were sometimes utilised as a type of primitive sandpaper for wooden tool handles.
In cultivation, the silver fern rarely reaches its maximum height of ten metres. It grows best in sheltered gardens and the bush, it needs shade and moisture. The silver fern is the only tree fern with silver undersides to its fronds, making a spectacular sight in the moonlight. When these fronds are laid silver side-up on the forest floor, they make ingenious track makers - a helpful pointer for trampers lost in the bush after dark. Silver fern fronds were also traditionally preferred by Maori for comfortable mattresses.
