For many, Vegemite is the real thing, the original sandwich spread, but it may come as a surprise to find out that it wasn't the first.
Marmite, The Rival...
Marmite is this year celebrating its 100th birthday making it the original sandwich spread.
Since it was first developed in the UK there have been many imitators of this yeast extract, which people either love or hate.
There is fierce debate across the globe as to which product is the best.

Cheese & Vegemite Mini Quiches
Ingredients
- 12 slices bread, crusts removed
- 2.10 oz (60g) bacon, finely chopped
- 2.8 oz (80g) sliced mushrooms
- 2.10 oz (60g) grated tasty cheese
- 2 tablespoons chopped chives
Method
SPREAD each slice of bread with butter then Vegemite. Press bread into non-stick muffin pans, Vegemite sides facing up.
COOK bacon and mushrooms in a frying pan for 2 minutes. Combine bacon, mushrooms, cheese, eggs, cream and chives.
SPOON savoury egg mixture into bread cases and bake at 410F (210ºC) for 15 minutes or until set. Serve hot or cold.
Mini Curried Pasties
Ingredients
- 8.8 oz (250g) minced lamb
- 1 medium potato, diced and cooked
- 3 sheets ready rolled puff pastry
Method
HEAT oil in a frying pan, add onion, curry and chilli powder and cook until onion has softened. Add lamb, stirring until cooked. Add tomato and Vegemite, cook for 5 minutes, then add potato.
CUT each sheet of pastry into four circles or squares. Place a heaped tablespoon of the meat mixture onto pastry circles. Brush edges of pastry with water and fold over. Press edges together with a fork to seal.
BRUSH pasties with egg and bake in 410F (210ºC) oven for about 25 minutes or until pastry is puffed and golden.
