Mangawhai has undergone dramatic changes throughout its history....
The Ngati-Whatua Maori tribe, who were the original settlers of Mangawhai, were annihilated in a battle with Hone-Heke’s tribe from the north in 1825. It is only in very recent years that a few Maori have moved back into the area after the Tapu was lifted as a consequence of that famous battle. There is today a small monument marking the area on the Mangawhai Kaiwaka road.
The people of Mangawhai are very proud of their commitment to conservation of their environment, in particular the sand dunes and tidal fronts.
With ever willing Mangawhai volunteers, a sand bund was constructed to block off a cyclone breakthrough in the sand dunes, which has been a resounding success.
Two species of endangered sea birds once again have the protection of the estuary dividing their nest sites from the mainland. However for those people interested in bird watching, one can either row a boat or swim over the estuary to view the birds during the summer nesting season. The nest areas themselves are fenced off for protection. The sand bund has also helped to keep the estuary clean as well as providing a safer harbour entrance for boating.
Until recently Mangawhai was a quiet little seaside summer resort. Two shopping areas have sprung up within the last twenty years, and the local inhabitants are managing their expansion in an environmentally responsible way.
