Lake Taupo ...

ew Zealand's largest lake, Taupo stretches over 616 square kilometers. Three hundred and fifty seven metres above sea level, it lies in a series of craters, produced by many thousands of years of volcanic activity.

Maori legend tells a different version of how the lake was formed. When the Ngati Tuwharetoa's legendary ancestor, Ngatoroirangi traveled inland to claim land for his followers he climbed Mt Tauhara. Seeing the barren wasteland beneath him he uprooted a totara tree and hurled it to the ground. It hit with such force that it broke through the earth, letting water flood into the basin, forming Lake Taupo.

The lake's full name is Taupo-nui-a-Tia, which could mean 'the great shoulder mat of Tia' or 'the great sleep of Tia'. This recalls an explorer from Ngatotoirangi's canoe Arawa who is said to have had a long sleep by the lake on his journey.

Set On The Central Plateau...
The lake dominated the region in more ways than by sheer size. Set on the central plateau with the backdrop of the volcanic peaks and lower hills it is very much a scenic focal point. Its pure sparkling waters must meet many demands: hydro-electricity, trout fishing, water supply, and a whole range of water sports.

Many rivers and streams flow into the lake. The Tongariro River is the largest of these. It is really an extension of the Waikato River which empties the lake by Taupo township.

Apart from Taupo township there are many small settlements dotted around the lake and countless places for camping and picnicking.
