The Kepler Track Info Map - New Zealand...
he Kepler Track...completes a circuit through some of the most magnificent scenery Fiordland National Park, in the South Island of New Zealand, has to offer.
The Kepler track creates a huge arc across the mountains between the South Fiord of Lake Te Anau and Lake Manapouri, then following the Waiau River.
The Tourist and Publicity Department gave Fiordland National Park a grant to develop the track and establish three huts. Development and construction was planned to finish during the National Park Centennial Year Celebrations in Fiordland in February 1988.
Walk Through A Diverse Range Of Scenery...
The Kepler Track is a 67 km walk through a diverse range of scenery from lake edge strolls, mountain climbs in beech forest, over open mountain tops and through U-shaped glacial carved valleys providing a four day trip for most people. A range of half-day walks, day trips and overnight trips are also available using parts of the Kepler Track system.
A Place To Sleep Every Night...
The huts along the Kepler track are available for all to use and are serviced; equipped with heating, gas cooking, gas lighting, mattresses, running water and flush toilets. These full range of services are available during the summer track season: November to April.
In return the user is expected to leave them clean and tidy and pay the appropriate hut fees.
Sections of the track suitable for day walks..
Above average fitness is required for the complete circuit, but sections of the track suitable for day walks will suit the less fit. Everyone can enjoy a walk on some part of the Kepler Track. There is access for people wanting to fish, hunt, climb and explore in areas beside and beyond the track system.
Experience required for the complete track circuit needs to be good as there is a day's tramping above the bushline.
It should be noted that the alpine section can be closed by snow and adverse weather conditions during the winter. Hut wardens are not present from late April to early November. There is also a need to carry water on the alpine section in summer as very dry conditions can be encountered. Take advice from the hut wardens who have current weather reports available.
