The Flax Seed Fibre Story.
Flax Seed Fibre is an excellent source of high quality dietary fiber which can be used as a more gentle and nutritious alternative to psyllium husks and other Fibre supplements/bowel regulators. It is Gluten Free, so is safe for those with Coeliac Disease.
Flax Fibre Original is a partially de-fatted flax meal, which has been produced in New Zealand by the exclusive process, which protects the active nutritional components. Flax Fibre Original has been independently certified, and carries the AgriQuality Certified Organic label - and it naturally tastes great!
So What Does Fibre Do?
Flax Fibre Original contains:
8 % soluble fiber (similar to that found in oat bran). This provides valuable viscosity, bulk and lubrication in the bowel, which helps regulate blood cholesterol levels by reducing the re-absorption of bile acids. The same factors regulate the rate of absorption of glucose, which is proving to be very helpful for regulating blood sugar levels for diabetics. In Flax Fibre Original the soluble fiber is present as mucilage, which can absorb up to 13 times its weight in water. Thus Flax Fibre Original has either a gentle regulating or laxative action on the rate of bowel action; taken with plenty of fluid it has a gentle laxative effect, or to regulate loose bowels, take with only a little fluid.
37 % insoluble fiber (mainly cellulose and lignin) which contributes valuable bulk and pore space. These factors allow the fiber to bind and dilute carcinogens; particularly those formed from bile acid breakdown in the lower bowel, to help prevent bowel cancer.
Thus the soluble and insoluble fibers are complimentary in action and Flax Fibre Original contains close to the ideal ratio of dietary fibre. The moist bulk provided by Flax Fibre Original helps increase faecal elimination and distributes pressure, helping to prevent diverticulitis and hemorrhoids.
Flax Seed Fibre is one of nature's richest sources of plant lignans, which act as phytoestrogens. These compounds are converted by the human body into human lignans, which have a number of functions.
So What Do Lignans Do?
1. Lignans have been shown to have a powerful immune-boosting effect. This is being utilized for general health reasons, as well as being a part of treatment programs for cancer and other degenerative diseases such as AIDS and diabetes. Boosting the immune system can help considerably with problems such as allergies, asthma, eczema and other skin conditions, etc.
2. Lignans act as phytoestrogens, which are used by the body to regulate hormone levels, especially oestrogen. Lignans are used in the body in place of oestrogen when levels are low, and can 'block' the receptors for oestrogen, when levels are too high. Flax Fibre Original is being used to help women with menopausal imbalances, successfully diminishing the unpleasant symptoms such as hot flushes, and emotional imbalance - and in the long term, to reduce the risk of breast cancer and osteoporosis.
Phytoestrogens have been shown to have a protective effect against the hormone related cancers, such as breast cancer; prostate cancer; bowel cancer; uterine and cervical cancers, etc. They are also being used in the treatment of these cancers.
3. Lignans appear to have potent anti-cancer properties. Lignans are being extensively researched for their anti-cancer properties. These properties appear to be coming from more than just their hormone regulating effects, and affect cancers other than the hormone-related cancers.
- Flax Fibre Original Seed Fibre contains 32% high quality protein, in the form of well balanced amino acids - including glutamic and aspartic acids, arginine (a known antibacterial factor for the immune system), glycine, leucine and lysine (deficient in most grains) amino acids.
- Flax Fibre Original Seed Fibre contains approximately 9 % Omega-3 essential fatty acids (ALA). This enough to be useful to assist in promoting good bowel function and act as a source of Omega 3 for a wide range of bodily functions (see "The Omega-3 Story").
- Flax Fibre Original Seed Fibre contains high levels of naturally occurring antioxidants. Only half a teaspoon supplies the equivalent to the RDA of Vitamin E.
- Flax Fibre Original Seed Fibre also contains useful quantities of calcium, magnesium, zinc, iron, manganese, phosphate, pantothenic acid, niacin, riboflavin, thiamine and mixed carotenes (vitamin A) and tocopherols (Vitamin E).
